    Reviewed : story about us...
Jonas Larsson - a Long Story To whom it may concern, here is a description of myself, what I do, what I like and who I am. I have divided it into several sections to make it easier to browse through quickly. Don't take everything seriously, although most of it is. I wrote this mainly as an English exercise, so if you're a native English speaker please let me know of all language errors you find here. Occupation Since January 1994 I am employed by the Thermo and Fluid Dynamics department at Chalmers University of Technology. I work there as a PhD student specializing in Computational Fluid Dynamics. My current project concerns numerical methods to simulate heat transfer in rocket engine turbines. The main goal is to accurately predict heat transfer to turbine blades in supersonic cases. If you ever feel like discussing numerical simulations, turbulence modeling or just fluid dynamics in general please drop me an email. Personal status I live together with my girlfriend Anne Kari. Education Nine years of basic school (mandatory), three years at Älvkulle Technical Gymnasium specializing in electronics, a Master of Science degree in Engineering Physics from Chalmers University of Technology specializing in numerical methods and fluid dynamics and two years as a PhD student in computational fluid dynamics at the Department of Thermo and Fluid Dynamics, Chalmers. History I was born a cold winter day in January 1970. My first years I spent in Motala. Although I don't remember much from those days I suppose they shaped me in some way. After third grade my parents moved to Karlstad, and as the obedient child I was back then, so did I. This change of school, friends and surroundings was great for me. I instantly felt comfortable in Karlstad, and had a few wonderful years there. Then after ninth grade it was time to go to a Gymnasium (High School/College). I've always been very interested and fascinated by technical things, and math was always my best subject, so the choice of Gymnasium wasn't very hard. For three years I attended Älvkulle Technical Gymnasium in Karlstad. I look back at those years with great joy. I had a lot of spare time, made a few very close friends and studied subjects I was interested in. But the easy days couldn't last forever. By 1988 I had finished the Gymnasium, and it was time to make a big decision in life. I never really doubted what to do. I applied to and got into Chalmers University of Technology. This meant that at the age of 18 I had to leave home and move to the second largest city in Sweden - Gothenburg. The first months was tough, and although the initiation period kept me busy, I came very close to moving back home to my parents. But I hung in there, and after half a year I had got used to living in the big city by myself. During my first two years at Chalmers I studied a lot, got good grades and finished a lot of courses, but I wasn't very happy. The third year I took it a bit more easy, didn't rush my studies and felt a bit better. By this time it was time for me to do my mandatory military service. I was placed in Stockholm at FRA (The Swedish equivalent to NSA) as a crypto analyst. Together with a few other guys with similar background I spent 15 months there. It was a wonderful time. We had a lot in common and really enjoyed each others company. In the summer time we worked when the weather was bad, spent sunny days on the beach and often took a trip into the city at night to drink a few beers, dance and look for girls. Although I didn't learn that much useful at FRA I will always look back at those 15 months as one of the best periods in my life. Back in Gothenburg I faced hard reality once again. I still had at least one year left before finishing my MSc degree. I didn't know what I was going to do after I was finished, so I didn't feel that motivated to rush things. But eventually I ran out of courses to read, and I had to write a Master thesis. The thesis took over half a year to finish, and in January 1994 I finally graduated. A few weeks later I was employed by the Fluid Dynamics department as a PhD student specializing in Computational Fluid Dynamics. I will probably stay there for four more years. In the summer of 1993 I met the love of my life - Anne Kari - a wonderful Norwegian girl that I'm together with. She now lives with me in Gothenburg. Interests As you might have guessed by now, I spend a lot of time in front of a computer. I often go for long adventurous hikes in cyberspace. But I'm not a complete computer geek. I love to go for long hikes in the "real" world too - accompanied by my girlfriend Anne Kari and/or my parents wonderful dog Atlas. I am very fond of dogs, and grew up confiding all my problems to Oskar - my parent former dog. Both Atlas and Oskar are/were a mix of Labrador and Golden Retrievers - yellow, friendly and medium sized dogs. I have always been very fascinated by technical things. My dad often tells this story about how I as a child used to scream "starta" ("start it" in Swedish) as soon as I saw a lawn-mover, motorcycle or anything with a motor. Other than spending time in in the nature I like to read a good book now and then. I am particularly fond of thrillers by authors like Tom Clancy, Ken Follet and Desmond Bagley. Now and then, when I feel cultural, I try to read books by Dostojevski, and sometimes I actually enjoy them. Everything about hard weather sailing or long sailing trips also attracts my interest. Some of my favorite movies are TopGun, Mask, Scent of a Woman, Silence of the Lambs, Schindler's List. I used to work out quite often but these days it is rarely more than a few times a week. I play badminton with a friend and now and then I get crushed by my brother in squash. In spring time I sometimes lift weights. Oh, yes, I hate soccer. Beliefs I was raised in a protestantic christian tradition. My parents aren't active christians, and they never tried to influence me in any direction. I am 100 % convinced that there is no God, no divine meaning of life and no postulated ethics. In short, I am an atheist. But I don't reject christian traditions, I only see them as traditions, nothing more. For example, I have no problem with getting married in a church - I'd better not because my girlfriend insists on it. ;-) So, if I don't believe in a god, what do I believe in ? I am a trained scientist. For many years I have been taught to think logically and never to introduce a concept unless it is motivated by hard evidence. I am convinced that the world is built upon strict causality and logic - nothing happens without a natural cause, and everything can, in principle, be described by scientific models. This, of course, also applies to the human brain. However, this does not mean that I see myself as a robot. The complexity of most systems in nature makes it impossible to predict and describe them in a meaningful manner. The fact that everything is based on physical principles does not mean that all aspects of this giant system can be described or predicted. I believe that the human race is the result of hundreds of thousands of years of natural selection. Hence, the only real purpose in life is reproduction - Darwin rules ! Everything a human thinks or does is the result of the physical / chemical composition of the brain and impulses from the surroundings. The composition of the brain is a result of genes, upbringing and previous experiences. I believe that we are born with some basic functions; love, compassion, hate, envy, ... The upbringing then enhances or suppresses these feelings and forms our personalities. In some way I guess you can say I'm a humanist, although I tend to disagree with almost everything the real humanists say and do. Things I like Reading good books, water-skiing, going for longs walks in the woods, Anne Kari - my girlfriend, Atlas - our dog, Anders - my three year younger brother, my parents, the feeling when you have finished an exam, driving fast, soaring, having a few beers with my old friends from the army, the United States of America, spring time in Sweden, the Swedish summer, fighter planes, people who are good at what they do, RPN, good looking girls, late nights, Grand Canyon, old Dylan tunes, Wilmer-X (a Swedish rock group), blue (both the color and the feeling), Carl Bildt (the Swedish Prime Minister), dogs, sailing, to be alone (not the same as being lonely), a well done steak, equality between the sexes, when my girlfriend does the dishes ;-), oh yea, I like life too ! Things I don't like Early mornings, having to plan things in advance, soccer, the constant lack of time I experience, the big time thief - television (I'm a bit divided about this), people who think they know everything but don't, that people believe in things like astrology and magic, that I waste too much time writing things like this, that people bet on lotteries, to not be sure of what you want, that I sometimes can't force myself to do what I know is best, cats, fishing, racism, small children (I can't handle them yet), being told what to do. Things I dream about Well, the usual I suppose: To get rich, marry a beautiful girl that I love more than anything on earth, raise a couple of wonderful kids and enjoy life. I have always had this dream about sailing around the world. I'll probably never realize it, but it's a nice dream. Maybe in my next life... Looks I am 1.95 meters tall, weigh 85 kg and have short blond hair. If you want more details feel free to take a look at some scanned pictures of me and my friends. Well, that is about all I can think of for the moment. You must be very interested in me if you've read all this. If you feel like it please drop me a line to tell me what you thought about this page, and how you found your way to it. Best Regards, Jonas
